Welcome to Allsparkle General Discussion! :)

This thread is for topics worth bringing up, but not worth whole new threads.

If it's Pony, it's on topic.

Just going to say it, now that G4 is well and truly done, it's not my favorite generation. It'll always have a spot in my heart for being the generation that got me into MLP, but it is not my favorite. That honestly has to go to G3.

I'll give G3 one thing. It has a good cast. Minty is certainly memorable.

But then, this franchise has really never had a bad cast. With any disappointing special/episode/generation, bare minimum you can always say "Those characters deserved better."

You still have the comics...YOU ALL STILL HAVE THE COMICS! For...one more issue. And then a G1 crossover. And...maybe a third Transformers/Pony crossover, perhaps? (They ended on a cliffhanger again, so...maybe a Movie S3 Transformer/G5 special?) (Sidenote: the Knights of Harmony are a neat idea, I just wish we'd get more than...the 2 1/2 issues we're getting of them. They have some neat design concepts, being based on mythical beasts).

And I still haven't seen the Friendship is Forever clipshows, yet. I'm going to have to do that before the G5 Movie comes out, I guess. I really thought they'd show those on Discovery Family eventually, but...nope, not yet, as far as I know.

IDW needs money badly, and their Pony comics have been a rare hit with kids. They're going to keep that train going as long as they can.

It's been so long now, I'm mostly doubting those will ever air in the US. They did show on Australia's on-demand service in April 2020. Then finally popped up elsewhere in the Ukraine a couple months ago. I have no idea what's going on with the releases for it.

Perhaps they're being saved as bonus content on a dvd set or something.

I don't understand the MordeTwi meme going around. The ship popped up years ago, then died fairly quick. But recently it came back with a vengeance and is everywhere, showing no signs of slowing down.

I don't get it. What brought this meme back after all these years?

There was the ship, and then there was the MS Paint fanart a year later, which got more exposure than the ship itself had. I think it might have been an internet history memorabilia thing, with the person who had drawn the fanart piece coming out and talking about it after a decade. I wasn't familiar with it until this time around, when it came up in an internet historian type video, and I'm thinking that something like that is where it started recirculating, similar to how the evolutionary spec book All Tomorrows recently became a meme and a YouTube art community.

Edit: Aha, it's TikTok's fault.

And LO...there came a ending. After 102 issues the IDW My Little Pony comic has come to a close. I just wanted to post something to commemorate the moment.

We'll probably get some comics for Gen 5, and we're still getting that G1 crossover (...maybe next week, but I wouldn't hold my breath), but I doubt the G5 comics will go on as long as the G4 ones did. I believe this makes IDW MLP the longest-running Hasbro-owned US comic run (...the UK Transformer comics still has EVERYTHING beat, but that's kind of a different ballgame, being half as long pagecount-wise, and weekly.).

There's definitely been ups and down. I've been critical of the IDW comics, myself. But, there were still highs to be had. The Return of Queen Chrysalis (1-4), Big Mac looking for a nail (9-10), Shining Armor and Cadence's love story (11-12), Luna getting her pet possum Tibbles (Micro Series 10 Luna), Mirror Universe Ponies (17-20), Discord teaming up with the CMC (FF 2), Rarity driving Applejack crazy on a roadtrip (FF 8), Applejack dealing with beaurcracy (FF 15), Luchador Cherilee (29), Siege of the Crystal Empire (34-37), 80s fashions ponies (64), Applejack making a recipe her mom made (72), the Mane 6 going LARPing (80), Zecora meeting her old friends again (89-92), FIENDship is Magic (The Chrysalis issue), and, of course, Luna putting together a team of reformed villains to lead a heist on a multi-dimensional casino (Nightmare Knights 1-5).

And I can't even completely say this ends on a especially high note. I'm pretty sure there's a text error within the first three pages (they say the Knights of Order, when it probably should be Knights of Harmony, at that particular point), and I would have liked to have more time with some of these new characters. The dogs, the cats, the bird, and the neat mythology-inspired Knights of Order themselves. The villain speech at the end...hits a little different now that we all know how G5 starts. And...well, let's say there's a hint that a certain villain might come back for a potential sequel, which I doubt will happen at this point (or it's setting up the Transformer crossover, hard to tell).

But, I'm still glad I finished it out. It's pretty obvious that there was a little bit of a crunch at the end, but given the circumstances, I still think it managed to work out pretty well. It's not perfect, but it was still a fun ride.

...Now where are the bat-ponies, the breezies, the kirin, and every other race I might be blanking on, IDW? ;p

I lost all my enthusiasm for the IDW comics a long time ago. I still think they got off to a great start but after a while I realized the only reason I was still reading them was because I was still amused that they existed and had a real presence in comic shops. It's still funny. Meanwhile three volumes of manga came out and I hate to be that guy but in this case the manga really was better. I did come back to IDW for the Transformers crossovers, also mainly out of amusement that they exist and the TFWiki crew had to cover them, and they were at least more fun to read than IDW's Beast Wars has been. I do respect what IDW did overall. It was a gamble, but they read the room and went for it, and they had a good run.

As to the future? Since the first G5 movie was a clear success I'm betting IDW is begging for the chance to start a new run. Maybe it won't last as long, but never say never. G5 is pretty frigging cute so far.

But most importantly we need the manga crew back for another round, because their take on Sunny Starscout would be the cutest thing we have ever seen.

the manga really was better
Well, YES. Agreed. More consistent art, writing, and more interesting story ideas all around. I still want them to do a Equestria Girls conclusion manga, just to have some closure there.

I'm just saying IDW had some good parts, too. I'd say check out Nightmare Knights if you haven't already. That one was a fun ride.

But, I'd be okay with the manga team and IDW still pulling double duty on G5, too. The manga team is good, but MUCH slower than the IDW teams. *looks over at all of IDW's many...MANY delays*. Yeah, IDW is still faster, though. Maybe barely, but still.

You can't rush brilliance.

The manga team even handled Pinkie well, in a way that makes me think they'd know exactly what to do with Izzy.

I liked it. The witches are actually surprisingly fun and adorable, in their ways. Which is a good thing, because the witches take up the majority of the issue. I totally feel for the witch who just wants to cosplay and go to a anime convention ...and burn some things. I do wonder if they'll have Trench meet Tibbles, Luna's pet possum. I guess the ponies let the witches stream anime, at least. They aren't savages, after all. (And, um....how did the G1 witches leave the volcano, if...they CAN'T leave the volcano? Did they just go REALLY deep into the volcano's caves, or...?)

I'm...a little surprised that we didn't get ANYTHING from the G1 ponies, yet. Hopefully, they don't wait too long into this crossover to do...any actual crossovers.

I guess the witch-ponies from the solicitations are literally made of Smooze. That's going to backfire on everyone. I didn't really get "teachers" from their designs, I'll admit.

Is it great? Eh...I think it's alright. I wasn't expecting a lot from it, so I guess I'm okay with it. Maybe a little disappointed that we don't get anything from the old G1 cast. If you're completely over G4 at this point, I don't think this will win you back. But, I'm committed until the end, I've come too far at this point to stop. Plus, I just want to see how they treat the G1 cast whenever they show up. Will they even be close to their original characters? Will it be obvious if the writer never sat down and watched more than the original G1 Movie? I just want to see.

And, hey, congratulations, IDW! You released a comic on time!

Spoilers for the January solicitations.
So...It kind of looks like the G1 ponies might not be showing up until issue 4...of this 5 issue miniseries? Maybe they'll be on the last page of issue 3, but the solicitation for 4 is kind of making a big deal of the G1 ponies showing up there.

This is...a bad choice. I'm still on this series for the long haul but...man, that's a weird choice to make for a "crossover"

And...not really a "bad" choice, but a weird one, is that they're calling out North Star, Rosedust, Lofty, Minty, and Lickity-Split to show up in the text. Even though Twilight, Firefly, Surprise, Posey, Glory, and Applejack are the ones featured on all the covers. And Sparkler and Morning Glory have also appeared on some of the alternate coves. So...are they just going to have a whole herd of G1 ponies without much characterization for them? I mean with only two issues, I guess they can't do much.

And I'm just going to say again, my preferred cast of "alternate G1 6" would have been: Fizzy (for her upbeat attitude), Gusty (for her bad attitude), Sweet Stuff (for her cuteness), Wind Whistler (for her intelligence), Shady (for the bad luck wildcard ability), and Heart Throb (for her flair for the dramatic...and because we need another pegasus to round out the cast). Maybe switch one of them out for Mimic with her golden horseshoes if you need a pure POWER or Masquerade if you need stealth. I'd suggest Whizzer for her speed, too...but that name ain't cutting it nowadays.

I totally agree that it's weird, and I'm just going to say it, disappointing, that they're putting off the crossover in this crossover event. And if what you say about having to wait until issue 4 is correct, my hype for this series just died majorly.

I mean, sure they have the witches. But they're the descendants of G1 characters, not G1 characters themselves. And are they forgetting that FiM has its version of the Smooze already?

I am so over G4 at this point. The only reason I'm reading this is for G1. So, so far it's been kinda disappointing.

I do agree with your alternates. Fizzy, Gusty and the others are best G1 team.

On one hand, that sounds really dumb. They're putting off the crossover in the crossover.

On the other hand, it is so typical of a G1 story to not show its cards until about halfway through or later. They loved doing that.

Who wants new G4 toys?! *crickets chirp* ...You're getting them anyway!

Kwistal Fwenz!

That name is maybe the most patronizing thing ever. But, the toys themselves are actually kind of pretty. Everyone gets crystal manes. $13 for a blind box feels steep, though.
