Here's a rather nice article about a British LGBQT+ "rambling" group from a recent article at the "Guardian" newspaper in the UK.

‘It can be transformative’: walking the Pennines with Queer Out Here.

5286.jpg

Groups like this West Yorkshire LGBTQ+ rambling society are great for health – mental and physical – and provide a reassuring way to meet new people.

It doesn’t take long to spot Queer Out Here, an LGBTQ+ walking group, as I stride up to Hebden Bridge station. There’s a Pride flag hung on a picnic bench, where a cluster of people have gathered. The location is appropriate: this West Yorkshire town is sometimes referred to as “the lesbian capital of the UK”. The 2021 census, meanwhile, cemented Hebden Bridge’s status as a rural hub for the LGBTQ+ community more generally: it revealed that 9% of its residents are lesbian, gay or bisexual – around three times the national average...

(Reposted from the original LGBTQ+ thread, as this is a nice, positive article.)

‘I knew I wanted to stay here for the rest of my life’: how London got its first LGBTQ+ retirement community.

5554.jpg

...Tonic Housing is the UK’s first LGBTQ+ affirmative retirement community run by and for the community. As well as the roof garden with riverside views, the building – designed by Norman Foster – has a lounge, floating garden, cafe, restaurant and roof bar, too.

Since its first resident moved in a year ago, five of the 19 units are now occupied, and three more retirees are moving in this month...Research conducted by Tonic found that of 624 LGBTQ+ Londoners aged over 50 surveyed, only 1% would consider moving to a general retirement scheme; but more than half would be interested in LGBTQ+ specific provision.

And while in this country the idea still feels novel (the New Larchwood in Brighton offers some LGBTQ+ affirmative accommodation, and there are plans for a similar project in Manchester, but there is not much else), in other parts of in the world, retirement communities like these are nothing new. The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Germany, the US and Canada already have similar housing options. In the UK, the team hopes it won’t be long before they expand beyond the capital....

How young people are shaking off gender binaries.

p0fc9ykf.jpg

Many Gen Zers are increasingly breaking out of the idea that gender means only 'man' or 'woman' – and these attitudes are having an impact...

...A series of VICE Voices surveys, conducted in 2019, shows many younger people [have similar] views on gender: 41% of the survey’s respondents (all Gen Z) said they identified as “neutral on the spectrum of masculinity and femininity”. Fifty-five percent also said gender labels don’t help them “define who they truly are”, and 62% “felt strongly that people should be able to use any identity label with which they feel comfortable”.

Attitudes around gender were already changing from Baby Boomers to millennials, but as Gen Z has grown up, they’ve helped facilitate even larger cultural and social shifts in these notions. It’s not that younger people are no longer identifying as cisgender or male or female – rather, they’re less likely to take for granted that gender is binary. These views have helped some young people find their voices, and also opened a dialogue about the complexities of gender identity across generations...

And although this is a bit old, it would be silly not to link to news about a non-binary Transformer at this website.

Transformers: EarthSpark Introduces Franchise's First Non-Binary Transformer.

...Nightshade appears and is introduced as they/them, specifically noting their pronoun usage. It is explained in the episode that pronouns such as "He" and "She" do not accurately describe who they are. After apologizing for misgendering them, Optimus Prime corrects the error and moves on...

And now for some uplifting news!

Munroe Bergdorf was just on the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show!

She was, amongst other things, plugging her new book, which is all about what is like to be trans (and not just about transitioning).

Here's an older video featuring her.

We used to hear a lot more from the political center about how if only radical pro-abortion forces moderated, a rational compromise could be reached. One of the bleak consequences of the Dobbs decision is that almost no one seriously suggests that anymore. Roe is dead, and it’s harder to accuse advocates of hysterically exaggerating the threat when emboldened state legislators are openly talking about executing abortion patients. The accusation of going too far too fast has now been aimed at supporters of trans rights.

Meanwhile, the end of federal protections for abortion rights has left trans people more vulnerable. “Do we have a constitutional right to privacy anymore? I don’t know,” says the Center for Constitutional Rights senior staff attorney Chinyere Ezie. “I’m a whole constitutional lawyer, and I can’t tell you with certainty, now that Roe v. Wade has been stricken, if each and every substantive due-process case that was decided on the theory that there’s a constitutionally protected right to privacy, to decisional autonomy, to medical decision-making — I don’t know if that exists anymore such that we’ll be able to defeat these laws.”
